Cycling the Thames Path: from Putney Bridge to Hampton Court Palace

Clarion Cycling Club Ride Report:

Date: Saturday 18 April 2026

Route (To and From): Putney Bridge to Hampton Court and return

Start / Finish Time: 09:00 – 13:00

Distance: 32 miles

Riders:

Ride Leaders: Clive, Alan

Riders: Trevor, David, Tomo, Iain, Matt

Surface: Mainly gravel path with some tarmac sections

Weather: Sunny with a light wind and moderate temperature, overall good riding conditions

Ride Report:

A smaller group than usual, which worked well given the volume of foot traffic along the route. The Thames path was particularly busy, and at one stage we encountered a large organised sponsored walk, requiring the group to divert onto the lower path to safely pass what felt like hundreds of walkers.

The group handled this well, showing good awareness and discipline throughout. Despite the busy conditions and mixed terrain, we maintained a steady pace, averaging around 11 mph.

There was one minor mechanical issue, which was resolved quickly without disrupting the ride.

A highlight was identifying a very good café option near the Putney start and finish point, which would work well for future rides.

Safety

No incidents. Good group discipline throughout, particularly in managing busy shared paths and pedestrian traffic.
