A long time ago much of London was covered in Forest. The Romans cleared some of it away, but larger swathes remained through Saxon and early Norman times. The largest trees and groves remain landmarks to the current day and there are now approcimately as many trees in Greater London as there are Londoners.

No wonder that many London place names have aboreal origins i.e. Becontree, Burnt Oak, Gospal Oak, Honor Oak, Nine Elms and Royal Oak to name a few. Many other areas include references to groups of trees i.e. Colliers Wood, Forest Hill, Wood Green and Arnos Grove.

Our capital is full of trees. In fact, while it might not always seem like it, London is so packed with foliage that it’s technically a forest. That’s according to a United Nations definition that states that a forest is anywhere that’s at least 20 percent trees. London’s a respectable 21 percent.
