Starting your cycling journey in London can feel a bit intimidating. If you’re tired of dodging heavy traffic or worrying about keeping up with fast-paced, lycra-clad pelotons, you aren't alone.
At the London Clarion Cycle Club, we’ve been championing a different kind of riding since 1895. Our motto is Fellowship is Life, which means we prioritise good company, beautiful scenery, and excellent cake over breaking speed records.
If you're dusting off an old bike or just bought your first hybrid, South London is packed with fantastic, low-traffic routes. Here are three of our favourite beginner-friendly cycling routes in Southwark, Greenwich, and Lewisham complete with the all-important mid-ride cafe stops.
1. The Waterlink Way (Sydenham to Greenwich)
The Vibe: Flat, green, and mostly traffic-free. Distance: Roughly 8 miles (one way).
The Waterlink Way is the crown jewel of South London beginner cycling. Following the Ravensbourne and Pool rivers, this route connects a string of beautiful parks, including Ladywell Fields and Brookmill Park. It’s well-signposted (look for National Cycle Network Route 21) and uses a mix of quiet residential streets and dedicated park paths. Because it's largely flat, it’s the perfect route to build your confidence in the saddle.
The Coffee Stop: Stop halfway at the Pistachios in the Park cafe in Ladywell Fields for a fantastic flat white and a pastry.
2. Greenwich Park & The Thames Path
The Vibe: Historic landmarks and riverside breezes. Distance: Variable (easily tailored from 2 to 10 miles).
If you want a mix of culture and casual riding, this is for you. Start with a gentle loop around the lower (flat) section of Greenwich Park. Once you're warmed up, carefully cross over toward the Cutty Sark and join the Thames Path heading east toward the O2 Arena. The path here is wide, shared with pedestrians, and offers brilliant views of the river and Canary Wharf without a car in sight.
The Coffee Stop: You can’t beat the riverside cafes near the Cutty Sark, or for a quieter vibe, grab some food from a local Greenwich Market stall.
3. Burgess Park Explorer (Southwark)
The Vibe: Ultra-relaxed, wide paths, perfect for building basic bike handling skills. Distance: A 3-mile loop.
Burgess Park is one of Southwark’s largest green spaces, and it is a haven for new cyclists. The paths are exceptionally wide and smooth, making it an ideal spot if you are getting used to a new bike, testing your gears, or just want a quick, stress-free spin after work. You can loop around the lake and check out the historic Chumleigh Gardens.
The Coffee Stop: Park Life Cafe right in the middle of Burgess Park is incredibly welcoming to cyclists and serves up hearty, affordable treats.
